Save our heritage or perished, it is not only bad news, but an attention and statement that delivered to the government [especially Tangerang Regional Government], communities who concern about the preservation of heritage buildings, and all people who read our journey.
Based on the picture of old buildings surrounding Jakarta published by National University Singapore, I and Dharmawan [Editor in Chief of IDEA Magazine] cruised the former rubber plantation house in Tangerang on Sunday, 23rd November 2008. It is the nearly forgotten country house in Tangerang, suburb of Jakarta. Located in the village of Karawaci Baru, City of Tangerang, near Cisadane River.
This building was formerly owned by biggest Chinese landlord for rubber plantation. Now, his descendants owned this mansion. However, they don’t live in their house ancestor.
Unfortunately, this building was not included the Heuken’s Historical Sites of Jakarta in the chapter of country house and former residences of big estate owner. Really neglected building!
This country house probably built in the end of 18th century. It has two buildings remain in the area of 2.5 hectare of land:
The principal building was built in Chinese architecture (three parts of house and accompanied by two pavilions in each wings, has typical designed as Chandranaya building). It front façade is opposite the Cisadane River. Now, part of this building was destroyed.
Next to be pulled down, the secondary building. It adopted the architectural style of “Indische Stijl” (1790 – 1820), garnished by Tuscan columns. Good example of country houses for this period are House of Japan in Palmerah and House of Citrap. Both of these country houses have been demolished.
It means the country house of rubber plantation in Tangerang is the only last stand for period of “Indische Stijl”. Whereas the front façade of secondary building is opposite the street to Cikokol.
SAVE OUR HERITAGE, WE NEED YOUR ATTENTION!
Since September 2008, the present day owner has been pulling down of the primary building. What a pity, beautiful Chinese mansion was destroyed by business interests, now the destruction is still on progress. It’s threatening the secondary building.
