THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF JAN TOOROP: DECODING THE MOSAIC ON PREMISES OF ALGEMEENE MAATSCHAPPIJ VAN LEVENSVERZEKERING EN LIJFRENTE – SOERABAJA

ON MISSION
Although the “Algemeene Maatschappij van Levensverzekering En Lijfrente” (General Company of Life Insurance and Annuities) has collapsed in 1921, the building is still sturdy until now and the rest of mystery blanket is still viewable: “A Pharaoh between two mother and children, and garnished by floral decoration and Masonic symbol”.  It was designed by Jan Toorop

Why this building was decorated by beautiful mosaic contains fully iconic symbol. Did you know the message behind?

The building of “Algemeene Maatschappij van Levensverzekering En Lijfrente” was designed in art nouveau style which decorated by winged lion. Built in 1901 in two storey, designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934). Sited on Willemskade 21, Soerabaja.

JAN TOOROP’S CHRONICLES
Jan Toorop was a Javanese Dutch painter. He worked in various different styles during his life, such as Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolist style, and Art Nouveau.

The 150th anniversary of Jan Toroop was commemorated on December 2008. Jan was born in Poerworedjo – Nederlands Indies, 150 years ago on 20th of December 1858. Deceased in Den Haag – Nederlands, 3rd of March 1928. Jan was a great artist who had occasion to design the beautiful mosaic in the façade on this premises.

He studied in Polytechnic School in Delft (1876-1879) while drawing lessons from Herman van der Weele in Den Haag (1877), Empire Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1880-1882), course in Allebe of August, Tekenacademie Brussels (1882-1885) include course with Jan Portaels (1882-1883).

In 1886 he marriage Annie Hall, an English woman. In 1905 he converted to Catholicism and began producing religious works. He also created book illustrations, posters, and stained glass designs. Toorop also produced portraits, in sketch format and as paintings, which in style range from highly realistic to impressionistic.

THE REPRESENTATION AND THE MEANING OF SYMBOLS

PHARAO
An Egyptian King
The existence of Pharao was explained in Holly Bible as well.

EGG TIMER
There are two egg timers.
The left egg timer shown a fully egg timer which still trickling down, whereas the other hand shown us empty egg timer,
means all sands was transferred in to the bottom
(the left egg timer which full of sands describes the glut condition, whereas the empty egg timer describe the famine or shortage of food condition)

COMPASS
The compass (used to form circles) represent spirit. It is the Masonic symbol that also represents The God as the creator of the universe

7 GRAINS (VIOLET COLOR)
The 7 grains in the left side has growth direction to the right and 7 grains in the right side has growth direction to the left. Each side has opposite growth direction.
(Right direction describes the abundant resources, whereas the left direction is the shortage resources)

5 GRAINS (RED COLOR)
The 5 grains in the left side and 5 in other side

12 GRAINS
The 12 grains represent the number of months in a year.
It can also represent the annual or annuity, because the ”Algemeene Maatschappij van Levensverzekering en Lijfrente” was the company of life insurance and annuities.

MOTHER AND CHILD
Mother and child represents the motherhood symbol.
It means nurturing, safety, security, protection, love, satisfaction,
provision, compassion, healing, growth

ROZENBURG
On the bottom left there is a word “Rozenburg”. It is the name of the porcelain factory in Den Haag that manufactured the design of Jan Toorop.

On the bottom right, it is the credit title of artist.

THE SECOND:
A MESSAGE FROM LIFE INSURER
Based on the representation and the meaning of symbols above, we try to decode the Jan’s message, of course the message was ordered by the company itself.

See the Bible, Genesis:41 (about Pharaoh’s dreams). Broadly speaking, according Pharao’s dreams, there are seven years of glut and full of food. After then, there are seven years of famine disaster or shortage of food.

It means the message for us that when we have a wealth and plentiful of resources, better if we store it for precautionary rather than spend it all. Because the future is uncertainty, we should prepare it through save the buying power for tomorrow.

In addition, the mosaic told us that we should protect our wealth and our life with the insurance because the uncertainty in future.

REMARK
The interpretation above closed to the objective of life insurer company suitably as “Algemeene Maatschappij van Levensverzekering En Lijfrente” which persuade the people for insurance their life and assets for precautionary, and also propose the safety, security, protection for our assets and our life that is like a mother who loves her children.
“And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming,
and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh,
and let them keep food in the cities”
